GUIDELINES FOR SAFE AND PRODUCTIVE HOSTING

The booklet issued to every household accepted for placement. Nine pages, A5, typeset the way the Household Placement Division would have had it done. It is free and it always will be.

It explains nothing the novel withholds. It is more bureaucratic than the book and never more informative, which is the whole of its horror.
Rule Five is on page one.
The withdrawal window is on page three, section two, subsection b.

The booklet also adds you to Luna Asli Kolcu's newsletter, which is where the second document in this world will go out. Unsubscribe at any time.

What the household is given

Every host household receives a booklet. It is eight pages, plus a cover, and it is cheerful. There are small line-art icons beside the rules, a smiling face and a peace sign and a clock, set on pale discs. It is the kind of thing a school sends home in a child's bag.

It sets out what is asked of a household during the assessment period: ordinary routines, and an atmosphere of calm, maintained for the duration.

Sophia gets to page three three weeks after the window has shut, which is a thing you can only do with a document that has real pages, which is why this one has them.

What it costs you

  • Nothing. It is a real object, properly typeset, and yours to keep whether or not you ever read the novel.
  • No spoilers. This is the document the family is holding on day one, and it knows exactly as much as they do.
  • A better sense of whether this is your kind of book than any description could give you — the honest reason it exists.

There is a second document in this world, a one-page Conclusion Notice mailed to the household after the assessment period ends. That one goes out to the newsletter later in September.

The novel it comes from

A flyer on a laundromat corkboard. Plain type, no picture, tear-off tabs along the lower margin. One tab already gone. Households with financial need. Stipend provided. All ordinary expenses covered.

Sophia fills out the form at her own kitchen table at one in the morning and tells nobody. Two Mediators arrive at dusk and stay seven days. They are courteous. They ask permission before they do anything at all.

Nothing in the house is taken by force and nothing is broken. Nobody in it is ever chased. The seven days are spent answering questions, and the cost of answering comes due.

The Observances publishes wide on 8 September 2026 at $3.99. Read it here.

Content note: sustained peril to children, and sustained financial hardship. A fuller note appears in the book.
